What is the best type of countertop for my new kitchen? Elizabeth Berkovich2024-08-31T14:42:26-07:00What is the best type of countertop for my new kitchen? European Cabinets & Design studios stands by the quality and construction of Caesarstone, Silestone and Eurostone engineered quartz countertops. Quartz countertops are a mixture of at least 93% crushed naturally-occurring quartz stone and resin and can be manufactured in a variety of patterns and colors. It’s possible to minimize the appearance of seams in a quartz countertop (solid colors hide seams better than patterns), and quartz is stronger than both granite and marble and therefore more resistant to cracking and chipping. The material is non-porous and stain-resistant making quartz countertops virtually maintenance free—it can be cleaned with simple soap and water. Are Aran Cucine cabinets environmentally sustainable? Aran Cucine is committed to doing its part to protect the environment by producing its products from recyclable and ethical materials in a sustainable way. It purchases most of its wood from companies certified by the Forest Stewardship Council and has installed a diligent waste collection system within its own warehouses—90% of waste generated by the manufacturing process is recycled. The company has also built four solar power plants with the goal of becoming completely self-sufficient in its energy needs. What will the process of designing my new kitchen involve? They do an amazing jobI’ve been working with Robert at European Cabinets for most of my interior design clients’ contemporary and modern kitchens and baths. They do an amazing job, are on schedule, customer service oriented, and reliable. Their installers are also great. The Italian Aran cabinetry is of high quality and looks beautiful. We were blown away and knew we found our kitchen. Robert, the owner, his lovely wife and entire staff worked to ensure we received the kitchen of our dreams. If you’re planning a kitchen remodel, you’re likely balancing aesthetics, functionality, and long-term value. With so many cabinet styles to choose from, it’s no wonder more homeowners are turning to European kitchens, especially Italian kitchens, for their clean lines, smart storage solutions, and durable, high-quality construction. Whether you’re doing a full renovation or simply updating your cabinetry, European modern kitchen cabinets offer a sleeker and more durable alternative to traditional American kitchens. Here's everything you need to know and why Italian kitchens, in particular, are leading the way. What Is a European Kitchen? A European kitchen is a modern, minimalist design that emphasizes seamless surfaces, built-in appliances, and intelligent space utilization. You’ll often find: Frameless (full-overlay) cabinets for a flush, sleek look Handleless or integrated handles instead of bulky hardware Panel-ready appliances that blend into cabinetry Smart storage features like pull-out pantries and corner solutions High-quality materials such as lacquered wood, glass, ceramic, and metal This style, seen prominently in Italian and other European kitchens, prioritizes both visual simplicity and high performance, perfect for homeowners who value clean aesthetics and functional design. Modern European kitchens, like this project we recently finished, are characterized by frameless, handleless cabinetry, integrated appliances, and clean, minimalist lines. What’s the Difference Between American and European Kitchens? The main difference comes down to construction and design philosophy. European kitchens use frameless cabinetry, meaning the cabinet doors cover the entire box for a seamless appearance and more... --- > Discover the top 10 modern kitchen design trends for 2025, handpicked by our interior designers. Engineered hardwood flooring is an excellent choice for an active, high-traffic home. When an unexpected sewer backup destroyed the hardwood floor in his Tahoe condo, this homeowner had a choice to make: Replace the hardwood floor, or invest in a new, modern flooring designed for the wear and tear of an active lifestyle. “The previous owner had installed a very traditional, and very dark natural hardwood floor. It was nice, but it actually felt very plastic-like. It was also hard to take care of and had started to peel due to some water ingress at a seam, which is not ideal in a vacation home used for sports activities year-round. When it comes to home renovations, the first request from the client is often to make their home bigger, says Revital Kaufman-Meron of Bekom Design in Cupertino, CA. Often, adding square footage is not an option, either due to budget or city planning restrictions. Every Bekom Design renovation project starts with a review of the potential of the property, followed by a space planning exercise to identify what can be done to maximize space before intervening with the structure. Style, value, and hygiene—three reasons to choose the only true rimless kitchen sink on the market. Stainless steel is by far the preferred material when it comes to kitchen sinks, especially in modern homes. Stainless steel sinks are typically either top mounted or under mounted. Top-mount or drop-in sinks have long been the go-to option until under-mount sinks hit the consumer market. A top-mount sink has a visible lip around its perimeter that rests flat on the countertop. The sink basin drops straight into the countertop cut out, and the perimeter lip holds it in place. Drop-ins are secured by hidden metal clips under the countertop as well as a bead of silicone caulk under the sink's edge. Left, a top-mount (drop-in) sink. Right, an under-mount sink. Under-mount sinks are mounted to the bottom of the countertop and held in place by heavy-duty clips and caulk or silicone. An under-mount sink has a rim, but it is not visible because it rests up against the bottom of the countertop. The edge of the countertop along the sink cutout is entirely exposed. But now there’s a third option: rimless. A rimless (also called seamless or flush-mount) sink is attached flush to the countertop surface for a sleek, vanishing-edge appearance. TopZero is the only true rimless kitchen sink. TopZero sinks are lipless, rimless, and seamless. What makes TopZero sinks different: First, hygiene. Whether a sink is self-rimming or mounted under the counter, it’s sealed with caulk or silicone. Modern design trends demand plenty of natural light—oversize picture windows, sliding glass walls, and skylights—but artificial lighting is usually an afterthought. The kitchen, with all its nooks and crannies, cubbies, and features, not to mention functions—cooking, projects, entertaining—requires a lot of different types of light. One central overhead fixture is not going to cut it. Light in layers Start with the ceiling and work your way down overhead (ambient), task, accent, and decorative lighting. Especially in the kitchen, where cabinets and other necessary elements like the range hood create annoying shadows, no single light source can provide all the required illumination. Older style kitchens had a central fixture and maybe a couple of feature lights. Modern kitchens usually feature recessed lighting, evenly spaced across the ceiling. How many you’ll need depends on the height and square footage of the ceiling. Susan Bowen and Revital Kaufman-Meron of BeKom Design in Cupertino are increasingly using LED strips instead of recessed cans to reduce the amount of “noise” overhead—smoke detectors, air grilles, sprinklers, etc. “The linear design of the LED strip reduces the number of elements on the ceiling. And not only that—the quality of the lighting is far superior to a recessed can,” said Bowen. Ambient lighting should be bright enough to really light up the room, but not so bright that you cringe every time the lights are turned on. The design duo behind Bekom Design, Susan Bowen and Revital Kaufman-Meron refer to their design aesthetic as “modern with warm touches. ” Many of their projects play off a modern, minimalistic palette but incorporate natural accents like wood and stone to create a cozy, homey feeling. Their Cupertino, CA, design practice is just shy of 10 years old, but in that time, they’ve honed their style and amassed a devoted clientele. “We’ve worked with many different styles, but more often than not, new clients come to us looking for what they see in our portfolio,” said Susan. Peter Pomianek says when you’re working for yourself, the possibilities are limitless. San Francisco Bay Area kitchen and bath contractor Peter Pomianek said his clients’ tastes typically lean toward transitional or contemporary, rather than the sparse, clean lines, metal edges, and handleless cabinets attributed to modern design. “This is still unique in California. People love it, but only a specific group of people are willing to install this very modern cabinetry,” he explained. When he works with clients, he advises them within the parameters of their style preferences. But working for himself, the possibilities were limitless, from colors and textures to slab selection and backsplash style. Peter found the LED pendant lights at Coast Lighting in Redwood City. I was immediately reminded of the modern European style that I like. My wife and I were building a house at the time and we decided it was the style that we wanted,” Peter recalled. His expertise extends to tile and slab installation, and he wanted to compliment his kitchen design with modern tiles, stone countertops, and a metal toe kick. For the cabinets, he wanted a modern hinge and door opening system, as well as under cabinet lighting—details that would make his kitchen stand out in California. CARB 2 compliance is an important regulatory standard for manufacturers in the furniture, cabinetry, and flooring industries. Created by the California Air Resources Board (CARB), it sets strict limits on formaldehyde and VOC emissions from composite wood products. Formaldehyde, a common indoor pollutant, is linked to respiratory issues and increased cancer risk. For contractors, furniture brands, and cabinet makers, meeting CARB 2 compliance is essential—not just for legal reasons, but to protect consumers and align with growing health and environmental expectations. As more states adopt California's standards, CARB 2 compliance is becoming a national—and global—requirement, not just a regional one. Navigating Formaldehyde Regulations for Home Materials Deciphering the rules around formaldehyde regulation and labeling is key if you want to ensure the products you purchase are compliant for formaldehyde emissions. Whether you’re building a home, undergoing a renovation, or planning a remodel, you’ve probably come across the term “CARB P2 compliant. ” This designation refers to strict standards designed to reduce the presence of harmful pollutants—especially the “new home smell” that comes from new cabinets, flooring, carpets, paint, or furniture. That smell is caused by volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which can negatively impact indoor air quality and trigger symptoms like headaches, itchy eyes, and respiratory irritation. One of the most common VOCs is formaldehyde, which is frequently found in composite wood products. To address these concerns, public health agencies in the U. S. and Europe have set formaldehyde emission limits. In the U. S. , the Environmental Protection Agency implemented... --- > Explore unique Italian flooring ideas & Italian style flooring that combine elegance, durability to transform your home with timeless beauty & modern designs. - Published: 2018-07-05 - Modified: 2025-06-25 - URL: https://www.europeancabinets.com/9-homes-more-beautiful-with-modern-italian-flooring/ - Categories: Flooring, Home Improvement - Tags: Custom Flooring, Home Design Tips, Interior Design, Made in Italy, Modern Design From Poland to Palo Alto, these homes, apartments, and townhouses are built to impress—from the engineered hardwood floor up. This granite alternative uses nanotechnology to make better, more sustainable kitchen countertops and cabinets. At Salone del Mobile, we found it used for tables, chairs, and even showers and sinks. Only a couple of decades ago, the only alternatives to hardwood, stone, and porcelain tile were inexpensive synthetic materials that didn’t look very nice, didn’t last very long, and weren’t recyclable or biodegradable. Today’s alternatives are integral to building a healthy, sustainable home—and they’re as beautiful as they are efficient. Fenix NTM is an exciting new material made in Italy by Arpa Industriale. NTM stands for NanoTech Matte. This space-age material is already used as a granite alternative for kitchen countertops and to build cabinets like Aran Cucine’s Erika collection and the new Sipario collection. A process called Electron Beam Curing scatters a dense grid of crosspolymers across the surface of the material, each with its own memory. Fenix NTM is known as a “thermo-laminate” and it’s suitable for horizontal and vertical use throughout the home, making it a sleek and practical option in many modern master bathroom ideas. Technically a renovation, the structure of this Monte Sereno home was taken down to the footprint, with significant modifications including a large, open kitchen, new bathrooms, and an in-law unit. Situated on a hilly lot surrounded by tall oak trees, Benjamin Guilardi said his 60-year-old Monte Sereno home was liveable, but as a veteran of the Bay Area real estate, design, and construction industry, he knew what was wrong with it. The kitchen, dining, and living area consisted of a series of small, distinct rooms. He wanted a great room with 13-foot floor-to-ceiling sliding windows to take advantage of the indoor/outdoor relationship that the site sits on. The clients wanted to remodel their modest galley kitchen with ultra-modern Italian cabinets and work in some of their Asian accents. Interior designer Toni DeWaal works with a whole range of styles, from traditional to modern, new construction to remodeling projects. Her most recent project, remodeling the kitchen of an Eichler-inspired home in Mountain View, brought her to European Cabinets for the first time. The clients wanted an ultra-modern kitchen, but they didn’t want it to be too cold. They also had some Asian accent pieces they wanted to keep and work into the space. Before: The cramped galley kitchen. “They’re style is very eclectic. They wanted to use a few strong colors in small doses, and they gravitated to grays and taupes. This became the perfect way to blend it all together and keep it from getting too cold,” said Toni. They’re an incredibly busy couple who work long hours and enjoy to cooking together. Their current kitchen was a cramped galley space with hardly enough room for one person to move, let alone two. Toni’s goal was to open up the kitchen to create more countertop space and make cooking more convenient. The beam structure and skylights made designing the island especially challenging. Lucile Glessner says remodeling her own Eichler kitchen has given her a better understanding of the emotional aspect of home design. After guiding numerous clients through the complicated process of remodeling their homes, award-winning interior designer Lucile Glessner turned to remodeling her own mid-century modern Eichler. While she was well prepared for many aspects of the renovation, what she didn’t anticipate is the emotional attachment you have to the project when it’s your own home. Lucile is somewhat of an expert on remodeling mid-century modern homes having worked on many in the San Francisco Bay Area. “Remodeling is complicated in an Eichler because you’re so limited by the post and beam construction. If you remove posts, you have to add beams to maintain the structural integrity,” she said. Lucile's kitchen features cabinets from Aran Cucine's new LAB13 collection and quartz countertops by Silestone. There was some minimal remodeling done when she and her husband purchased the home several years ago, but this time around, she was tackling major aspects of the entire house including the floors, doors and windows, and a bathroom. The largest part of the project was her kitchen, which she wanted to open up to bring in more natural light. “Outside views and natural lighting are really important to me. Here’s how to determine the ideal island size and shape for your kitchen. These days, kitchens are rarely designed without an island. The kitchen island is the modern equivalent of the hearth—the focal point of the kitchen around which all activity revolves, from meal preparation to entertaining. A well-designed kitchen island offers an informal place for family and friends to gather, as well as creating a bit of separation between those who are cooking or cleaning and others who are simply enjoying the company. This small island is primarily an eating area, but also offers additional storage and space for food prep. Do you have room for an island? If you’re building a new home, you can easily plan enough space for a large and functional island. But if you’re renovating an older kitchen, there are a few things to consider when adding an island: space, shape, and the existing work triangle. The absolute minimum distance from the base cabinets to the kitchen island should be 36 inches. Enough room for two people to stand back to back or pass by one another. Ideally, the distance will be 40 to 42 inches. You need enough room for the cupboards and drawers to be opened freely and comfortably, and yet close enough so that you can move comfortably and efficiently between the two work areas. There is no hard and fast rule about the shape of a kitchen island. Key measurements, design tips, and ideas to create a beautiful and functional powder room for your home. The powder room is likely the smallest room in your home, but with well-planned design and a few unique touches, it can make a big impact. Powder rooms, also known as half-baths, were once a luxury found only in large homes, but these days they’re found in most American homes and even apartments. The average powder room is just four feet by five feet, which is both a challenge to balance form and function and an opportunity to make bold design choices without overwhelming your home. The powder room can have a style all it’s own; it doesn’t, and shouldn’t have to resemble any other room. From the flooring to the faucets, we recommend taking a chance on a unique material or style. However, a word of caution—don’t over decorate. Each element you choose should compliment not compete with the overall design, and keep in mind to leave some empty space on the counter for guest to set down bags or in a really small powder room, add a clever hook on the door for bags or a coat. Flooring When designing your powder room, it's a good idea to start from the ground up. Full bathrooms will likely require a tile or stone floor, but there are far more flooring choices for the half-bath because of the absence of a shower or bathtub. Making key decisions in the right order can not only save you time and money, it will also make the experience a lot more enjoyable. Step 1. Look & style The first step to any kitchen design process is to define a general look; don’t let yourself get hung up on handle styles and paint colors. What’s important at the beginning of the process is the style—modern, transitional, traditional. Make a list of any problems you have with your current or past kitchen. Whether you’re working with a contractor or doing it yourself, our step-by-step guide to planning, designing, and building your new bathroom will save you time, money, and hassle. The very first thing you need to do when planning a new bathroom design is to clearly consider who it’s for and how long you’re likely to use it. Are you designing a master bath for the couple of the house, and do you plan to stay there indefinitely? If it’s a bathroom for the kids, how old are they? Is it a bathroom for your in-laws or attached to an all-purpose guest bedroom? The answers to those questions will dictate the answers to the following items below. Even a small bathroom can take a lot longer to remodel than you might first think, but a little planning and making design decisions before you tear out any tile will likely save you time and money, not to mention a whole lot of hassle. Layout Deciding on the layout of your bathroom is somewhat harder if you're building a new home because just about anything is possible. If you're doing a bathroom remodel, did you like the general layout of the bathroom—toilet, sink(s), and shower or bathtub—and if did, great, the plumbing is already in place. If you didn't, is making drastic changes worth the cost of moving the plumbing around? This is also the time to consider single or double vanities’ shower, tub, or both; and where you’re going to put the toilet. How To Keep Your Kitchen Free From Germs Your kitchen might look neat and clean, but it could still be hiding harmful micro-organisms that cause foodborne illness. Is your kitchen safe and free of germs? The answer depends on how well you clean and disinfect high-touch areas—including stylish surfaces like Italian kitchen cabinets, which can collect fingerprints and bacteria just like any other material. If you’re looking for practical ways on how to keep your kitchen free from germs, start by cleaning all surfaces with warm water and dish soap or a store-bought cleaner to remove dirt and grease. Then disinfect with diluted bleach (1 teaspoon per cup of water, made within the past 24 hours), or use an EPA-registered disinfectant—look for “EPA Reg. No. ” on the label. Most disinfectants need a few minutes to work, so always check the instructions. Be sure to disinfect your faucet handle daily, your sink weekly, and wipe down fridge and cabinet handles, including your Italian kitchen cabinets, at least once a week to maintain a truly germ-free kitchen. The contemporary open kitchen in this new $11 million home in Palo Alto was designed to complement the living space, not be the focal point of it. The floor plan was done and most of the furniture had been purchased for this $11 million home in Palo Alto when interior designer Julie Brown of Brownhouse Design began working on the project. “The first thing we did was put the furniture in the house. The homeowner had previously purchased several items. Next, we started with the cabinets,” she said. The style of the home is contemporary but with a lot of warm finishes inside and out like stone, copper, and wood. The design of the indoor/outdoor pool leads you from the front of the house through to the courtyard, while large windows allow for a clear line of sight from the living room through the courtyard to the family room. It feels very connected instead of sprawling and cold,” Julie said. This contemporary kitchen features granite countertops and a custom range hood. For the kitchen, the homeowner wanted clean, simple cabinets that wouldn’t fight with the natural elements, but rather support them to create uniformity in the design. They chose cabinets from the Penelope collection by Aran Cucine in light gray. The upper cabinets are glass. “There’s no condition in the house where you enter a room and face cabinets. In every instance, you have to walk into the room to find the cabinets,” Julie said. When it comes to designing a bathroom, black and white is one of the most timeless and striking color combinations. These contrasting hues can create a space that feels both elegant and bold, whether you're aiming for a modern, minimalist look or a more traditional aesthetic. However, like any powerful design duo, there’s a fine line between creating a stylish black and white bathroom and one that feels overly stark or cluttered. In this guide, we’ll explore some of the best black and white bathroom ideas to help you strike the perfect balance. From choosing the right accent pieces to adding textures and pops of color, you'll learn how to create a stunning space that feels both refined and inviting. Let’s start by discussing what to avoid before diving into the design tips. Key Considerations for Black and White Bathroom Ideas Before diving into specific design ideas, it's important to keep a few key considerations in mind when decorating with black and white. As one of the timeless bathroom design trends, this powerful color scheme can quickly go from sophisticated to overwhelming if not balanced correctly. The goal is to create a bathroom that feels stylish and functional, without becoming too cold or cluttered. Balance the Contrast: Too much black can make the space feel heavy, while too much white can make it feel sterile. The right balance will depend on the amount of natural light in the room, the size of the space, and the overall vibe you want... --- > A custom walk-in closet isn’t about resale value—it’s about having a space perfectly designed for you. A custom walk-in closet isn’t about resale value—it’s about having a space that’s perfectly designed for you. When it comes to custom closets, a poorly designed closet costs the same to install as a well-designed closet. The difference is how you use the space. And while quality closets are seen as a plus in the real estate market, creating one isn’t about resale value, it’s about having a closet that perfectly meets your needs. Wall closets or reach-in closets are the most common type of bedroom closet. The minimum depth for a wall closet is 24 inches and the length of most closets is around 60 inches. Walk-in closets don’t necessarily take up more square footage than a large reach-in closet, but they do require a different shape space. Either way, whether you have a walk-in or reach-in closet, the space should be designed to your needs. Here are a few important things to consider before you design, or redesign, your closet. Consider your space If you’re renovating, is your current closet big enough? Would it be worth it to sacrifice some additional space to the closet? The benefit of a well-designed closet is that you likely won’t need a traditional dresser, which frees up square footage in the bedroom. If you don’t already have a walk-in closet, another option is to convert an adjacent room. With custom closet storage solutions like these, your stuff will never get lost again. Get organized A well-designed closet maximizes space. Realtor Anton Danilovich of Bay Sotheby’s International Realty wants to bring the sex appeal of modern design to the East Bay, and he does just that together with his business partner Mark Cherno of ONY Homes. Their latest project is at 1152 Brown Ave. in Lafayette, CA. The 1. 95-acre lot 20 miles from San Francisco offers unobstructed views to the east and west. As soon as he pulled up, Anton said he could see the potential of the property. It’s the type of property that a home could sit on that lot and be worth $2 million, or it could be worth $5 million or $10 million depending on the amenities and the work put into it,” he said. They enlisted award-winning architect Steven Kubitschek to design a comprehensive modern upgrade—they kept little more than the roof and some of the walls of the original home designed by William Wood. A timeless hardwood floor is a great way to boost the resale value of your home. When it comes to flooring, there are a lot of options out there: solid hardwood, engineered hardwood, wood composite, laminate, concrete, and carpet to name a few. Well-made laminates are a great cost-conscious option for a high traffic floor, but both realtors and designers alike will tell you that if you really want to make an impression with guests or potential buyers, hardwood is the way to go. Sustainability A high-quality engineered hardwood floor can be next to indistinguishable to a solid wood floor, even by a trained eye. So why should you choose engineered over solid? The first reason is sustainability. Wood is a renewable resource, but the demand for wood flooring has increased significantly in recent years to a point of making a solid wood floor in every home an unsustainable proposition. An engineered hardwood floor requires less wood to construct than solid planks so the finished product is much more sustainable—especially if you’re interested in an exotic wood like rosewood or Brazilian cherry—and many engineered hardwood floors like those from Skema are endorsed by the Forest Stewardship Council and the Sustainable Forestry Initiative. How engineered hardwood planks are made Engineered wood planks in Skema’s Oximoro Ermitage collection are constructed in three layers solid wood each placed with the grain running in opposite directions to create a very stable platform. Frank Lloyd Wright was one of the early advocates of the open floor plan. Wright thought homes should be more fluid and in harmony with nature and how we live. In today’s world of everyday foodies, wine aficionados and micro-brew enthusiasts, busy, working families, small apartments, and open, modern design, the kitchen is the place to entertain. Not only does that mean the host doesn’t want to be locked behind a closed door preparing dinner while their spouse entertains guests, but food preparation has become part of the party. While the advantages of an open kitchen are plenty, there are some drawbacks too, for example, how to avoid having your living room sofa smell like bacon days after your Saturday brunch party. Here’s what you need to know to design an open kitchen right. Zone design In place of walls, some homes favor zone design. The kitchen and dining room are in one zone while the living room is in another, separated by an architectural element like a step or a floor-to-ceiling fireplace. This allows for fluid movement throughout the space and a lot of natural light, but you don’t have to look at a pile of dirty dishes while you enjoy your post-meal coffee. After completing four Eichler projects with Glessner (and two more in the works), we thought it was time to sit down and talk with her about the return of Midcentury Modern design and the longevity of the Eichler appeal. Why is Midcentury Modern so hot right now? I think the millennials see it as a classic and historical era, and it has the appeal of a slower, less complicated life. For my generation or older—since I’m French I did not really grow up with that American style—people were looking at either a contemporary or traditional look. But for the millennials, Midcentury Modern is far enough in the past that it’s interesting. But in choosing two colors—a first for the world’s authority on color—Pantone is attempting to make a very modern statement about the traditional perceptions of color association. “In many parts of the world, we are experiencing a gender blur as it relates to fashion, which has, in turn, impacted color trends throughout all other areas of design. This more unilateral approach to color is coinciding with societal movements toward gender equality and fluidity, the consumer’s increased comfort with using color as a form of expression,” Pantone says. While that’s all fine, we know, that what our customers really want to know is how to use these two fantastic colors in their home without turning their kitchen into something out Alice in Wonderland. “I love these colors, but the key to making them modern is not to overdo it," says Alexandra Berkovich. "Don’t redo your entire kitchen or bathroom with pink or blue cabinets, instead add one or both of these colors as details—a lamp, a piece of furniture, or even an accent wall if you’re so bold. ” With Alexandra’s guidance, we’ve rounded up a dozen or so modern items in Rose Quartz and Serenity to give your home a fresh look. European Cabinets & Design Studios spent one day there perusing kitchens and countertops, tile, shower floors, faucets, appliances, lighting fixtures, sinks, and toilets. But the most prolific product seemed to be the wine refrigerator—virtually every manufacturer we passed had one! Back home exhausted and in need of a glass of red, we picked out our three favorites: 3. Perlick 24” Signature Series Dual-Zone Refrigerator/Wine Reserve The Perlick Signature Series Dual-Zone Refrigerator/Wine Reserve is basically a wine fridge for the whole family. The unit has two independent zones to sore both food and wine at the appropriate temperature. Use these modern ideas to design a kitchen that fits your life and reflects your good style. A new kitchen is one of the largest single investments you can make for your home—according to Remodeling Magazine’s Cost vs. Value Report, the national average cost for a major kitchen remodel is over $56,000. Because kitchen remodeling projects are so expensive (and so involved), homeowners generally want the end result to look as fresh and modern as possible.  These eight kitchen trends have outlasted their heyday. Take a look at our alternatives: Appliance garages Corner counter cabinets with a rolling “garage door” used to be a popular way to hide away small kitchen appliances, but these cabinets took up a lot of valuable counter space. And, appliance design has improved significantly from that bulky old Cuisinart blender. Companies like Smeg, Bugatti, and Ascaso Dream are designing small appliances that border on being small, functional art pieces. We suggest storing your most-used appliances right out on the counter and keeping the others in large pull-out drawers. A step-by-step illustration of how a custom spiral staircase gets installed. The client was building a new game room in the basement of their Saratoga, CA, home. They needed a spiral staircase to accent the basement because the space is very narrow, but they also wanted something that was unique and attractive. European Cabinets & Design Studios suggested the K8 Jazz collection by CAST, a stainless steel spiral staircase with the solid wood steps in Wenge, with a stainless steel protective edge. Starphire Ultra-Clear Glass was used in the guardrail. The staircase was custom-designed by ECDS, manufactured in Italy by CAST, and assembled in the client’s home. Step 1: The landing at the top of the staircase is installed first, to ensure that it’s flush with the floor. Step 2: The main steel pole is attached to the floor with bolts and aligned with the landing step. Step 3: You remove the upper landing and place the stairs and spacers. This is the quickest part of the process; it only takes about 20 minutes and is a lot like working with Legos! Step 4: Once all of the stairs are placed, you form the spiral, lock the steps in place with stainless steel tubes, and install the railing and rods. Step 5: Lastly, the railing and glass are installed at the top of the stairs. This couple wanted a modern, energy-efficient home that was still cozy and inviting. When Louis Lin and Karen Fann set out to renovate their Monte Sereno home, they told their architect they wanted it to be as environmentally friendly as possible.  Guided by the LEED principals for sustainable design and the Passive House Initiative, the architect created a house that takes into account the movement of the sun across the sky for maximum efficiency. While the project is technically a renovation, the resulting three-bedroom home with a new pool and guesthouse retains little beyond the original footprint. The large windows let in extravagant amounts of light, but subtle shading on the glass helps conserve energy. The two-level house features multiple zones for the heating and cooling system so that the family only has to heat or cool the part of the house they’re using, rather than the entire structure. The seemingly redundant radiant heating system uses a system of under-floor pipes carrying hot water, which is heated by solar panels. “The radiant heating keeps the house at a comfortable 74 degrees so that we don’t have to turn on central heat the majority of the time,” says Karen. When heating isn’t required, the excess energy is diverted to the pool, which is insulated to retain the heat. A second set of solar panels provide electricity. The project earned a Bronze Award in the Residential Interior Over $100,000 category from Professional Remodeler magazine’s 2015 Design Awards. The primary challenge of this remodeling design project was how to integrate the new modern front door and interior, without compromising the integrity of the house. The new front door was provided by Oikos. A new front entry was designed including two full-length side windows to showcase the eight-foot front door by Oikos, while also slightly separating it from the rest of the façade. The height of the entrance and hallway was increased to nine feet. The door is finished with porcelain on the outside and white lacquered glass inside. Long before they were married, and even before they had started dating, Katie Heley says her husband Rich had wanted to build his own house. He bought a modest piece of property in Palo Alto with a 1940s home in need of a lot of work. Rich teamed up with Davide Gianella of Acadia Architecture, an Italian-born architect just getting started in the Bay Area (the firm is based in Los Gatos). From professional-quality espresso machines to built-in coffee stations, there are a lot of options for having great coffee at home. But for those of you who don’t want to shell out several thousand dollars or who don’t have room for one more wall appliance, there is another option: A stovetop Italian espresso maker. Bialetti is one of the benchmark brands in Italian coffee, and their espresso makers are available in classic aluminum, modern stainless (safe for induction cooktops), and electric. You can also get either an electric or stovetop milk frother—a French press-like aluminum pitcher with a plunger. Both create milk that’s richer and creamier than what you’ll get at the coffee shop because they don’t use steam to create the froth thus diluting the flavor of both foam and coffee. European Cabinets & Design Studios designed this custom staircase with a unique curve for a new home in Saratoga. The original plans for this very modern home in Saratoga with a stunning view of a local winery called for a rather traditional staircase. “You went up three steps to the landing, turned left, and then continued to the second floor. The rest of the house was extremely modern, and that staircase wasn’t going to match,” says Robert Berkovich. The client wanted an open staircase to further lighten the space, but the challenge was that the space allotted for the staircase was very narrow and it had to make a turn. Robert designed a solution that involved a CAST staircase supported under the center of each step by high-quality series 304 stainless steel modular sections, which can each be set to a specific direction. The Tekna Jazz collection features solid wood steps with a stainless steel edge guard to protect against wear and tear. “We didn’t want to just do a landing. With the Tekna Jazz modular system from CAST, we were able to make that curve,” says Robert. The open staircase also allowed for the grand corner window to extend to the floor. You can either remove a wall entirely or replace it with sliding glass. Either way, it will turn your bedroom and bathroom into an open, relaxing space. Interior designer Jennifer Hale choose modern kitchen cabinets from Aran Cucine’s Miro collection to update the look and function of this 1990s home. Interior designer Jennifer Hale of Interiors for Modern Living was tasked with updating the look of this 1990s spec house and improving the functionality of the space. “The design of the house was very choppy. Our greatest challenge was streamlining it and fixing the layout of the footprint,” said Hale. The original range was on a small kitchen island, and there was a doorway dividing the kitchen from the living and dining rooms. “The kitchen was really disjointed. The client wanted to be able to have informal dinners at the kitchen island, so that was a big part of how they wanted it laid out,” she said. Jennifer's team pushed the doorway back and removed a massive group of cabinets to open up the room and let in more light. To compensate for the storage that was lost to open up the rooms, they added the upper cabinets, as well as a large walk-in pantry with pocket doors. “We wanted to maximize all that storage,” she said. They replaced the cooktop with a new Wolf range on one wall and designed a new island with a breakfast bar and prep sink. You don’t have to have a huge home to have a fantastic kitchen with a ton of storage. Condominiums and even some homes are getting smaller and smaller, but that doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice on design, too. Follow these simple design ideas to create an efficient, comfortable, and attractive space. Create an open, unified space Modern kitchens are often designed as one open, unified space with the living room and dining room, with cabinets that look almost like modern furniture. If you’re doing a kitchen remodel, consider removing that old diving wall to let in more light and integrate it with the adjoining space. Aran Cucine’s Erika collection features open shelving, cabinets, and drawers designed specifically to be used in a living space, offering a unique, unified look for your kitchen and living room. Choose bright efficient lighting Poor lighting can make a small space look smaller, while good lighting serves to maximize both comfort and efficiency in a small kitchen. Consider adding modern, efficient lighting under and on top of cabinets to create an attractive and practical area to work. This unique corner drawer is available with most Aran Cucine modern kitchen collections. Use Every Inch of Storage Finding creative storage and organizing solutions is key to maximizing a small space, and we don’t mean while shelves and plastic bins. The industrial look of concrete is on the rise this year, with interior designers, bloggers, and the mainstream media all touting its low-cost look. But installing a concrete countertop in your kitchen can be a laborious and messy task, and if not properly sealed and regularly maintained, concrete countertops are vulnerable to staining and etching from citrus, red wine, and oil. These three new concrete-inspired colors from Caesarstone, Raw, Fresh, and Sleek, meet the ever-growing industrial trend with the raw look and coarse texture of concrete, fused together with the quality, durability, and ease of maintenance that Caesarstone quartz offers. Now Skema is offering wall covering options made from recycled and reclaimed wood! Six million trees could be saved every year simply by reusing the wood we already have rather than throwing it into a landfill. Reclaimed wood has already made a huge statement in interior design in the form of doors, shelves, and furniture. Now, the Italian flooring company Skema has launched Open Mind Vertical, a new line of wall coverings created exclusively from recycled wood. Recycled lumber is a key ingredient in the future of sustainable development. Most reclaimed lumber comes from beams and decking rescued from old barns, factories, and warehouses. Open Mind Vertical also takes wood from a variety of more unusual places, from boxcars to coal mine structures to wine barrels. Environmentally, this wood is a better option than virgin wood from farmed forests that use heavy amounts of fertilizer, and it also cuts down on the amount of wood sent to the landfill. This wood often has a unique appearance that can’t be matched by any type of process designed to distress new wood. The aged appearance of reclaimed wood is tied closely to its history and origins—some pieces have fascinating stories worth retelling. Also, older wood tends to have a much tighter grain structure because it has been exposed to changes in humidity for a longer period of time, making it more stable than virgin wood of the same species. The success of sustainability... --- > For the third year in a row, European Cabinets & Design Studios earned a "Best of Houzz" award for Customer Satisfaction. - Published: 2015-03-12 - Modified: 2020-02-16 - URL: https://www.europeancabinets.com/3-times-a-charm-best-of-houzz-2015-customer-satisfaction/ - Categories: Awards - Tags: Award-Winning Design, Company News, Customer Service The modern kitchen cabinets are from Aran Cucine's Volare collection; the dark quartz countertop is from Caesarstone in Carbono. Finding great kitchen and bathroom cabinetry was a top priority for interior designer Kathy Monarch when working on a $6 million project in Palo Alto, CA. It was the third home she had done for her long-time clients who became dear friends, and they wanted something very contemporary. The home would have a grand open kitchen adjacent to the dining and living areas, as well as five bathrooms. “I was basically designing the house from beginning to end,” Kathy said. “Because there was so much cabinetry involved, finding someone with great contemporary cabinetry was one of my first priorities. ” Interior designer Kathy Monarch. Alexandra Berkovich of European Kitchens & Design Studios says shades of blue, ranging from bright, cheerful blues to deep hues will be popular. “It’s barely February, and already several customers have come into our store asking for kitchen cabinets in blue,” says Alexandra. “This is the case for customers looking for modern kitchens as well as traditional kitchen designs. ” Tineke Triggs of Artistic Designs for Living in San Francisco expects to see blue as well as black and dark gray colors. “Dark colors tend to act as a base, to help the walls recede. But in the kitchen, dark cabinets make a strong visual statement and hopefully add interest to the countertops and textural accents we often find in the backsplash,” she said. “You shouldn’t be afraid to make a bold design statement where people converge. ” Dark cabinets make a strong visual statement. Granite has been the official status symbol in the world of countertops since the 1990s, but quartz is quickly gaining ground as the high-end countertop of choice. If you’re comfortable with the yearly maintenance required to keep a granite countertop at its best, not to mention the high cost of natural stone, by all means, choose granite. But if you would like an attractive, durable, and affordable countertop that never needs to be sealed, then you want quartz. Quartz countertops are a mixture of at least 93% crushed naturally-occurring quartz stone and resin and can be manufactured in a variety of patterns and colors. The material is nonporous and stain-resistant making quartz countertops virtually maintenance-free—it can be cleaned with simple soap and water. Quartz isn’t just for kitchens! The National Sanitation Foundation has certified both Caesarstone and Silestone quartz countertops to be safe, and some are also certified Kosher. Quartz is also stronger than both granite and marble and therefore more resistant to cracking and chipping. Choosing rounded edges and corners further reduces the chance of suffering an irreparable chip. Both materials are extremely heavy—quartz is actually slightly heavier because it’s denser—and professional installation is mandatory. Unlike granite, it is possible to minimize the appearance of seams in a quartz countertop (solid colors hide seams better than patterns).
